The Perfect Summer Trail Day: Dusty Singletrack, Good Friends and Bikes for Everyone
There's a short, glorious window each year when the trails dry out, the loam turns to that perfect hero dirt, and the light hangs around until well past nine. Summer mountain biking in the UK is what we daydream about all winter — dusty berms, sun-dappled singletrack, and a flask of something cold waiting back at the car park. Here's how to make a day of it with your mates and your family in tow.
Pick the right trail centre
Half the magic of a UK summer ride is the trail centre itself. Places like Coed y Brenin in Wales, Glentress in the Tweed Valley, and Cannock Chase in the Midlands all offer graded loops — blue, red and black — so a mixed-ability group can split off and regroup at the café. Look for a centre with waymarked trails, a bike wash, and somewhere to refuel; it turns a ride into a proper day out.
Top tip: arrive early. Dusty summer trails get busy by mid-morning, and there's nothing better than rolling the first lap while the dirt is still cool and tacky.
The bikes that make the day
A great day out is much easier when everyone's on a bike that suits them. For the trail-hungry riders in your group, the Trailcraft 29 Mountain Bike by Northpeak is a brilliant all-rounder — big 29-inch wheels to roll over roots and rock gardens, and confidence-inspiring geometry for those flowy red descents.
Bringing the kids? The Sprocket 24 Kids Bike by Littlewheels is sized to keep younger riders comfortable and in control on blue-graded loops, so the whole family can ride together rather than waiting at the bottom. And if your idea of a perfect day mixes gravel doubletrack with the odd cheeky singletrack link, the Tempo GX Gravel Bike is a versatile choice for covering big, scenic miles between trail centres.
Go further with a little help
One of the best things about modern riding is that nobody has to get left behind. E-bikes have quietly transformed group days out — a fitter rider and a more casual one can finally do the same loop and still have fun. That extra assistance means more laps, longer routes, and the energy left over to enjoy the descents rather than survive the climbs. If you've got mixed fitness levels in your group, leaning on a bit of electric help keeps everyone smiling all day.
Pack for a long, happy day
Summer riding catches people out. The sun's lovely until you bonk halfway round a 20km loop. A few essentials make all the difference:
Plenty of water — more than you think, plus electrolytes for hot days
Snacks the kids will actually eat at the regroup point
Sun cream, a peaked helmet and clear or tinted glasses for dust
A basic trailside kit: spare tube, multitool, mini pump and a quick-link
A track pump in the car so everyone sets off on proper pressures
On that last point, the ProTrack Floor Pump by Crankhouse lives happily in the boot and gets the whole group dialled before the first lap — far easier than fighting a mini pump in the car park.
The perfect finish
Roll back into the car park caked in dust, swap stories over a coffee and a slab of cake, and you've got the recipe for the kind of day everyone remembers. Get the bikes sorted, pick a centre with trails for the whole crew, and make the most of the long summer light. We'll see you out there.
